White Mountain Imbolg Celebration

When: January 31, 2021 at 3:00pm

Where: Show Low Lake - meet in the parking lot then proceed to the site.

What: Public Imbolg Ritual

What to bring: A chair if you can't stand for long periods of time, a cup and your happy face!

Who to contact:

northernarizonapagansheathens@gmail.com

Also check out our FB page for more details

.

Show Low Lake is kind of a primitive site with lots of volcanic rock, wear sturdy shoes and watch where you walk. Again with the primitive site theme, there are no bathrooms and no electricity. Maybe there is in the actual camp ground, but that is closed for the season, we are just in the "park" area.

.

Feel free to bring a chair if you are not able to stand for a long period of time, however I don't see us being at the site for longer than an hour to hour and a half.

.

We will meet up in the parking lot and then proceed to the site. Ritual starts at promptly at 3:30pm, we run on Heathen time, not Pagan Standard time (please try to be on time). This will be a Wiccan style ritual as the majority of the group seems comfortable with that. (As opposed to a Heathen Blot or Druid ritual.)

.

Typically there would be a potluck to follow the ritual, but it may be to cold for that. Those of us who would like to, we will adjourn to Denny's for the post ritual shared meal. Please bring money if you intend to eat or drink at Denny's.

.

What is Imbolg? Imbolc or Imbolg, also called Brigid's Day, is a Gaelic traditional festival marking the beginning of spring. It was traditionally held on 1 February. It lands about halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. Historically, it was widely observed throughout Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man. It is one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals—along with Bealtaine, Lughnasadh and Samhain.

My 2019 In Review

I always feel as if my year passes uneventfully, I get up, go to work, day in and day out. This year I KNOW something big happened, but I took the time to look back and see that there were some milestones and interesting things that occurred.

.

Back story, we are building a house on 40 acres of property in northern Arizona, we don’t live in the house yet. We are living in a 5th wheel on the property until the house is completed.

In February we received 14 inches of snow! Certainly more snow that I have seen in many years! I had a grand time building a snowman and then taking the #10 scoop and “sledding” down a left over pile of dirt from the house foundation. If I had been more daring I would have hiked to the Knoll and sled down that. It’s a much steeper longer slope.

In April a friend of mine had a hearse meet up in Death Valley, California (you read that correctly, hearse as in the vehicle that conveys people to their final resting place). At that time of the year I was feeling pretty low about things and I decided at the last minute to drive out. I had to buy a new battery for the hearse as it had died from sitting all winter. That reminds me… I need to go start the hearse up when it warms up a little more.

I had much needed rest and relaxation at the hearse meet up, brief thought it was. I did miss going to the brothel (yes, you read that correctly too). Not sure how many people in this day and age have been to a brothel but I am intrigued by the whole idea. Of course, there is a restaurant, and you can eat and not participate in what happens in a brothel (which is what I would be doing, not the other thing).

I did have a strange encounter, while in Death Valley. We stopped off at a restaurant where the chef was a refugee from the bigger more extravagant restaurants IN Vegas. There was a fellow wandering around the restaurant with a pitcher of a bloody mary (I think). While none of us paid much mind to the fella, he came up to our group and asked who was driving the Buick hearse. I volunteered that I was driving the black Buick (my friend drove his white Buick, which I had forgot). The fella then said that he was dying of cancer and he really liked the Buick and wanted that hearse to be the one for his last ride. I thought it was an odd request, but I gave him my calling card. I haven’t heard from him, so I can hope that he is doing okay.

Now for the main event… In July/August I went to Sweden and Germany. I spent about 2 weeks in Sweden and then the 3rd week was spend driving from Sweden to Germany.

So many things happened, I don’t think I could recount them all in this one little word doc. However while in Sweden I got to visit many cathedrals, both whole and in ruins. I also got to Anundshög and see the burial mounds and the big rune stones. While I was there I got to see Gamla (old) Uppsala, which is more burial mounds and a great deal of history. It was fascinating, I was disappointed that you were no longer allowed to walk the mounds. Unfortunately people tromping about has caused the mounds to weather more than they should.

One of the cathedrals I visited was the Uppsala cathedral which is surrounded by runestones as well. I attempted to take photos of all of them, but I probably missed some.

We went to Dalarna and saw the Dala horse factory. The Dala horses are the usually orange/red colored wooden horses from Sweden. I’m still not clear how a childs toy became so popular! It was great to see how the little horses were made, and that each town has their own color scheme for their Dala horse.

While we were in that region we stayed at a Bed and Breakfast in Rättvik, this was the week before classic car week, but the town filled up with all kinds of classic American cars. I think of all the classic American cars in the world, at least 50% of them are well cared for in Sweden. The big thing to do if you own one of these cars is to cruise, just like in the 1950’s. I think is some places cursing is illegal in this country!

We found a round-about in Rättvik where I sat on the grass and took pictures of as many classic cars as I could. It was a great time! I was filled in on what a “tractor” was. I thought it was farm equipment, but in Sweden it means something different.

I may have the details wrong, but I believe form 16-18 a Swedish teenager is given a driver’s license however they have to drive a “tractor.” A tractor is a car that can’t go above 30 Kilometers per hour.  Then when the young person becomes 18 I think they are allowed to drive a non-restricted vehicle.

On one evening I asked our host if they played Kubb, which is said something like cup and cub. Kubb can be described as a combination of bowling and horseshoes. It’s a lawn game where the objective is to knock over wooden blocks (kubbs) by throwing wooden batons (kastpinnar) at them. I’m surprised he knew what I was saying, because I was pronouncing it “koob”. We had a good evening playing Kubb and trying not to hit each other with the batons.

Then it was off to Wacken, Germany. If you know much about Germany, you would know that Wacken is a small town in the north. You might not know that Wacken is the home of the largest outdoor Heavy Metal Music festival in the world, which was precisely the reason I was going there!

It felt like a forced march to Germany, but I think that always happens with vacations, despite your best intentions you end up HAVING to get to some place by a certain time which causes this mad dash.

We got to Wacken at midnight, and we got a good camp site which was a 10-15 minute walk to the inner field of the festival grounds. Some people had it worse and had to walk 2 miles in to go to the shows. I was shocked, here in America I don’t think that would happen. Our lazy butts would want some kind of shuttle service!

The most important thing about Wacken was I got to perform my friends hand fasting ceremony there! I am honored that they asked me to do their ceremony! It was Viking themed, instead of rings, they exchanged a key and a knife made from a spring from their 1963 hearse. That was about as “metal” as anything could be at Wacken!

I saw 21 bands in four days. Didn’t know I was a metal fan? Interestingly enough I didn’t realize how many bands were “metal” enough to be at Wacken, including Ice-T (yes, the rapper).

Speaking of metal we took a 1970 Chevy Suburban from Sweden to Germany, the don’t make ‘em out of metal like that anymore. The Germans coming through our camp were intrigued by our old American cars.

I don’t know if I’ll every lay eyes on Germany again, but Wacken was truly an amazing experience that I will treasure, always.

Once Wacken had completed, we went to Denmark, and had a missed connecting with one of my friends, friends.

We made it back to Sweden went to a town called Trollhättan, because of the name. We North Americans find the name quite amusing. Trollhättan is a beautiful town, I would have liked to have spent more time there! We hiked along the canals, and took photos of the buildings and even visited the Harley Davidson store there.

We also went to another car show, with a fellow hearse driver’s hearses. It was amazing to see the European hearses up close and personal. It was also amazing to meet a few members form the SHS (Scandinavian Hearse Society).

There was even a 1970 Volvo at that particular car show, like the one I learned to drive in. I’m sure that my friends thought I was silly fawning over a Volvo, but it brought back great memories from my childhood.

We went to Stockholm, and did the touristy thing visiting the shops and the down town area. I took a picture of a sign that read, “Welcone to the center of chaos! presented by frustrated bikers, uncharged electrical scooters and lost tourists.”

Lastly visited a Viking themed restaurant, Tunnan. We sampled different types of food Vikings would have eaten, like reindeer jerky. I got “trout” which turned out to be salmon and turnips. We drank this mead/ale beverage, it was quite thick but quite good.

The next morning, I flew out from Sweden to go back home.

In September our house passed the combo inspection which consisted of plumbing electrical, HIVAC and framing. We are one step closer to living in the house. I think there are only a couple more inspections after the combo.

I think the last big event of this year was in November we got a St. Bernard puppy and named her Lucy. I believe she is 10 weeks as the writing of this word doc.

As a final thought, hearses, have connected me to people I would have never known and taken me on adventures I never thought possible. What kind of people drive hearses? Simply, the best!

AND IF YOU ARE WONDERING WHAT KRAMPUS IS:
Krampus is the Yule Lord, or Christmas Devil. The good children get a visit from Saint Nikolaus on Christmas Eve. The bad children get a visit from Krampus and will get coal in their stockings, or get stolen away by the evil beast.

Krampus is a large, hairy, demon like character with cloven hooves and long horns. He is often wearing a reed basket on his back to put all the bad boys and girls. He is rattling his rusty chains and clanging his bells to let you know he is coming.

Krampusnacht is traditionally celebrated on the 5th of December annually. The men from the village don the costumes of Krampus and Saint Nikolaus. They are often accompanied by black and white angel characters and sometimes "Pertchta". Their walk is called the "Krampuslauf".

This group is dedicated to bringing the "Krampuslauf" to Phoenix and all things Krampus...

2018 in review...

I always want to do a review of my year, but I always kind of feel it's 11 months of boring with a month of excitement.

Not this year, this year was HARD for me.

Technically starting in 2017... I was texted that my horse was bleeding on 12/29/17. I had my room-mate drive me to the stable because I was to sick to drive myself. The poor horse's chest was all swollen up, raw and bleeding. I called the vet out and that lead to six months of treating my horse for some unknown infection and scary diagnoses, which in the end turned out to be a summer sore and allergies.

While that was going on Tigger my cat, my best bud, developed a tumor in his nose. Unfortunately there was nothing we could do and I had to put him to sleep. I was terrified that Finn, the horse would suffer the same fate.

I had to ask my work if I could work from home or quit my job and start a wonderful career with Pizza Hut. I am extremely lucky they said yes, I could work from home!

Next was time to pack up the house. I didn't think the Waffle would have sold it so fast. Then it was a mad dash to sort, get rid of and pack up over 20 years worth of stuff. I hate moving, I just sort of get lost in the minutia of it all. So it was very slow and arduous for me. I am thankful for my room mate that did most of the packing.

Then it was time for HearseCon, which I almost backed out of 100 times. I had agreed to split my room cost with my friends. I just couldn't do that to them, so in spite of having to move at the same time I decided to make the drive to Denver. I think it was a much needed vacation. It was one of the best times I have had at HearseCon.

I returned to a much different home 174 miles away from my previous one. My 1500 square foot home on 1.5 acres has been downsized to a 5th wheel trailer on 40 acres. I live in the middle of nowhere and now we work to finish the house we've been building for about 3 years. It's all terrifying and wonderful at the same time.

So for 2019, we hope to finish the house and I am excited to achieve one of my life long dreams, going to Wacken Open Air in Germany!

The saga of Sparkle Farts...

It's Christmas and in my family that means a secret Santa gift exchange. We draw names at Thanksgiving and when we are all together at Christmas, we of course do the deed, and exchange the gifts.

So, adult and child names are just thrown into a hat and drawn. This year my Waffle (a.k.a. Husband) drew his niece of course the gift shopping/purchase was then pushed off onto me. Now our niece is all of seven years old and one of the items she really, really wanted was a, Baby Alive.

You can guess by the name that the "Baby Alive" does all the things that a really baby does, such as eat, drink, cry, talk and yes, the resulting bodily functions. Now as a woman who doesn't have children but does have animals, I really don't see the point in having a doll that does that. Ya wanta feed and clean up after something? I have a horse and four cats, my niece is more than welcome to feed and clean up after. My niece herself has a dog and rabbit (which she doesn't clean up after).

...but a Baby Alive is what she wants, and Uncle Waffle drew her and I am certain that he wouldn't get her the doll. So we were talking about what to get her and some how the Squatty Potty came up and the unicorn in the ads would be perfect.

Through a quick internet search we discovered that there was a unicorn doll that eats and well, you know. This was called, "Poopsie Slime Surprise Unicorn-Rainbow Bright Star." It's droppings consisted of a sort of sparkly gelatin substance. I was laughing and said that if my horse had "Poopsie slime surprise" I'd need to call the vet!

I went to Amazon and added "Poopsie Slime Surprise Unicorn-Rainbow Bright Star" to my wish list.

As I was actually cleaning up my horses not so sparkly surprise... The thought that, I'm sure my mother-in-law wouldn't want to have to fuss with mixing up slime and sparkles so that my niece could feed the unicorn. If only there was a gift that didn't require such maintenance, but was along the same lines...

Amazon recommendations to the rescue, enter Sparkle Farts!

Sparkle Farts is a unicorn plushie that, you guessed it, farts. His story is that he got into the Royal Taco Patch, which apparently gives unicorns terrible gas! Not only does he fart, he also talks with a slight British accent! THIS sounded like the perfect gift from Uncle Waffle!

So I ordered the flatulent Equine from Amazon, and gleefully awaited his arrival.

My mother-in-law asked the Waffle what he got for his niece... He told her about Sparkle Farts.

Now... I wasn't there, but apparently this was quite the unacceptable gift to get our niece! I am really at a loss as to how a doll that you have to fuss with and feed and change is superior to a taco eating unicorn that has gas. Ya don't have to feed him, he takes care of that for himself.

Somehow I have become the proud owner of an Equus monoclonius, that has a taste for tacos and is jet propelled on Tuesdays.

And my niece? She got knitting looms with lots of yarn, personally selected by Uncle Waffle.

Watch dog horf*

I'm sure folks know by now that I have a BLM Mustang horse. I always say of her she is vigilant, this makes her a great watch dog, trouble is she can't bark.

I work from home and I have to be at work pretty early in the morning, somewhere around 7:30am-8:30am I hear this sound that, to me, sounds like someone trying to fire up the generator. I didn't think to much of it, I thought it was my father-in-law attempting to fire up the gene because they were out of power.

My husband wakes up and hears this sound and asks what it is, I tell him what I think it is and he says it doesn't sound right to be a gene. He goes out to start his day and I don't think to much about it. Not sure how much later, he comes in and he says, "you know what that sound is?!" I of course said I didn't know. He says, "it's your horf*," snorting because the neighbor's horses and goats are out!

I go outside, and sure enough, she's snorting and carrying on because the horses and goats are by our pump house, 300ft roughly. As we look at the neighbor's horses, we notice one has a halter and lead rope on. So waffle (aka the husband) says we should catch that horse and starts walking over. I told him that he can't go straight at them he kinda has to meander around like he lost his car keys and he's looking for them. He doesn't listen to me and starts walking over, and the horses take one look and trot back home.

Our neighbors came back and put their horses here they belong.

*Waffle adopted the use of "horf" when he thinks the horse is doing something stupid after Tango, touted to be "the stupidest horse ever" on Twitter.

Halloween 2018

Well Boos and Ghouls, Halloween has come and gone. It always amazes me how I spend the whole month, even year looking forward to it and it's over in a couple hours. I guess that is what Christmas feels like to everyone else.

So to start my day off I wanted to go wash the hearse, but I stopped to air up a tire and get a coffee at the local "Maverick" convenience store.

I came out of the convenience store and a couple young men yelled at me they liked my house, meaning my hearse. So I was a little confused, but said "thanks" anyway... I'm not sure if they thought I just looked homeless or they thought a hearse would make a good home? I decided that they were going with the hearse is a good mobile home and get away car for vampires...

There were some firsts for me, I had to scrub the crappy clay dirt up here from my hearse! It sucked, once I was done I thought I needed a nap! Right in the middle of it all a guy pulls up to wash his car and he asked me about my coach. I showed it all to him and I explained how they were made yackitty smakitty… and then I said something about it being called a "hearse" and he looks at me, straight faced and says, "what is that?" I just held my arms open wide and gestured to my hearse.

This was also my first "Trunk-or-Treat," something of a necessity since I have moved from the city to the rural county side. This enables kids that live outside of the city limits, on farms or ranches to all gather someplace and get candy. It's kind of like in valley were you just bus the kids into the most affluent neighborhoods to get candy.

I pulled up and a young man said for me to park next to a fire pick-up truck (so not the big fire truck but a pick-up truck) which I did. Then I set about putting spider web on my coach and just decorating for the evening. From behind me I hear some woman say, "I'm sorry but that is just creepy." I just said something over my shoulder like, "isn't that the point?" as I continued to decorate. Then I put my church truck out and pulled my casket part way out of the back and perched it up on the church truck.

The Trunk-or-Treat is extremely fast paced, seriously, there is no break, I threw candy in bags for a good two hours non-stop. In the neighborhood Trick-or-Treat, you got a break after one mob of kids would show up then you could go to the bathroom, do a shot or re-supply candy. The nice thing is I didn't have to spend $100 on candy this year. I bought the biggest bag I could find for $10 and that's all I had to get. The Trunk-or-Treat supplies the candy!

Now as to the best costume, for me it was a kid that dressed up as a faun from the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The kid made their whole costume from armor to cloven hooves! There was a girl, I'm not sure what she was supposed to be but she made a wide toothy grinning mouth using hot glue and fake stiletto nails. She affixed her home made prosthetic to her face and then covered it with a hospital mask. When she got up to me, with a great flourish she pulled her hospital mask off one ear to reveal her grotesque maw. I thought her prosthetic was well done. There was also a cute little robot costume made out of cardboard and one family showed up in those inflatable t-rex costumes!

One kid showed up in a Santa costume, and I tried to spread the good word of Krampus. He just looked at me funny, I told him to look it up when he got home.

I thought it was interesting that people kept asking me if I was from the Silver Creek or Owens Livingston Funeral homes (I'm shocked there are two of them up here). I tried to make it clear that this was my own personal vehicle and not one of the funeral homes. I know that sometimes funeral directors don't like people that aren't in the bizz to drive coaches around, and especially not ones with caskets in them.

I suppose I should mention my costume... I really wasn't sure what I had to wear, but luckily crap that I took to HearseCon included my skeleton poncho, then I had the hat my friend Tina made me and gave to me at HearseCon and I bought a skeleton half mask off Amazon. Not my best costume, but I thought it was pretty cool considering most of my stuff is in storage a the moment. Sorry no pictures I was just to tired and it would have been a selfie. Harvey was my co-pilot and he finds phones difficult to use because he's just cold and boney.

All in all it was a good time and I look forward to doing it again next year.

Wednesday, August 15, 2018

I haven't been able to ride in a week due to weather and adulting. I have been extremely frustrated about that. So today when the rain storm showed up at 1:00pm, I was pretty bumbed. Then the rain passed and the sun came out! OH GOODIE!

Some back story today, besides the rain, Finn has been harassed by cattle drinking her water all day. She's also been pretty amped up and excitable.

About 4:00pm (I don't know why I'm listing the times as if they are important). I go out to the barn, I notice a cow tipping Finn's water bucket over, it obviously was empty. So my mother in law filled the bucket while I went into the barn. I got Finn all saddled up, but I don't have a round pen, I would have defiantly round penned her today.

So I half ass longe Finn, we both kind of suck at longing... Everything seemed okay, but with all the factors I thought something might happen. So I mount up and I start flexing Finn's head around and I notice things aren't quite right. In fact they are quite wrong, Finn is pinning her ears back and crow hopping! Luckily I was attempting to flex her head, so I already had her head turned as she was trying to hop. At the same time I was kicking her, to make her move forward.

In my adult brain, I'm thinking, "this horse is gonna throw me." The kid me, "just kept her head turned and hang on!" Fortunately I managed to stay on and stop the rodeo.

But wait there's more! So I told the Waffle where I was going and headed off down the road toward the neighbor that has dogs. Finn doesn't like dogs much, and when I saw that he was on his excavator and there were two little dogs running around, I did turn around. Then I thought, "well, I suppose today is as good as any to get pitched off, Finn needs to see the excavator!" So I turned back and yelled at the dogs to, "git!" The fortunately listened to me and I began riding toward the excavator, Finn looked at it but didn't seem to mind it. We got all the way passed it and she was only concerned when it was behind her, and she wasn't very concerned at that.

More back story here, when we were at the stable in the valley there was a rock quarry nearby and they had huge earth movers and excavators running at all hours. Finn was so fearful of those machines that it was really challenging to take her out on the trail. In fact it was down right nerve wracking because she was SO spooky. I did a lot of ground work with her when her allergies got bad, and that really seems to have helped.

Finn was more concerned about the other neighbors sheds than she was about the excavator!
On the way home she did do her patented "jump stop" spook. It's weird it's like she jumps and puts her legs out wide, like a dog when they are wanting to play. At leas that is what it feels like she does. So I made her do circles to get her head back in the game.

After that she was fine and we finished out a nice ride, can't wait to do it again tomorrow.

The zombie horse... that broke my heart

As you may or may not know, I am having to give my horse antibiotics twice a day for an infection she got in her nose.

Now the stables I board at is gated and just like a gated apartment complex you must punch in a code and the gate opens. The gate at the stable isn’t very reliable.

I had been out with family all day so when I got the meds and was out to the horse for her evening dose, it was drizzling and dark. I pull up to the key pad a punch in the code and the final tone sounds I look at the gate expectantly… Nothing… “Maybe I punched it in wrong” I put the code in again the final tone sounds

Nothing…

Well maybe if I punch in the code and run over to the gate and try pushing on it…

Nothing.

Now probably 20 years ago I climbed the fence to get into the stable when the gate wasn’t working (or I forgot the code). Now at 42? Yeah I want no part of scaling the fence.

I know that I had seen vehicles out on the trail, if I can find where they get in I can drive the Jeep over to the area where my horse’s stall is. So I drive around and nothing… I do, however, find a gap in the fence where I can fit through.

I consider, should I just go home and forget her evening dose? Should I walk through the desert at night on a trail that I’ve personally never been on? Should I go around the fence and get on the drive way and walk that in, even though that is meandering and will be a much longer walk?

Of course, the most logical choice is to walk a trail that I’ve never been on before… at night… in the desert… while it’s drizzling….

On a good note I had a flash light with me, not just my phone.

So, I get out of the Jeep and curse my luck, I grab her medicine and the coffee can full of pellets and strike off into the desert.

Now, I’m not afraid of the animals, if there were any, I know coyotes can be a problem, but I am always more concerned about humans. I didn’t think any homeless people would be out this far and I could probably walk past them, I’m sure they don’t want to be bothered and neither do I. Generally, I think if I stumbled on humans in the desert at night, I don’t think they are going to be up to any good. That’s what scares me.

With these thoughts in mind I walk down the trail shining the flashlight on any bushes I thought looked suspicious and looking behind me every so often. The desert is quiet, and that is something I like about the desert.

Once I get closer to the horses I can hear the cribber cribbing, poor horse. I start thinking there is a gate in the fence and I begin looking for a trail off to the gate, but I didn’t see one, so I carefully picked my way around bushes and avoided cactus. I found the fence I needed and climbed through.
Now that I feel safe my mind wanders back to this whole bull shit operation that I had to climb through a fence and walk all the way back here. Granted it’s not a particularly long walk, thought it would have been twice as long if I walked the drive in.

I start thinking about the night that I had to have an emergency call to have vet come out and check my horse. What would I have done if the gate didn’t work? Would the vet have been willing to walk in and look at my horse? What medical supplies would have been needed, would the vet have been willing to carry that stuff in? Should I complain to the barn manager that the gate didn’t work. People had no problem complaining about my horse when she was sick.

All these thoughts running through my head when I become vaguely aware of a large white skeletal creature looking at me. I stop… I look to my left… and there stands a giant skeletal horse… I stare, I blink my eyes, because that really can’t be standing there!

As I return to my senses I realize this creature is in a stall, its ONE of the horses in the stable.
I walk over to this thing, still not really believing what I am seeing…

And then my heart breaks…

It was a skeletal horse because it was grey and looked as if it has been starved. I don’t usually come down this way and I hadn’t ever noticed this horse. I don’t know if it is a rescue or an old horse. It IS a giant, I think it’s withers are as tall as I am… It had to be 16+ hands tall. It wasn’t a draft horse, but I suspect maybe it was a thoroughbred or maybe some exotic (to me) horse like a holsteiner.

I went over to it and it seemed to be propped up by the fence. There was hay in it’s feeder, making me think maybe it was just and old horse that was losing weight. It didn’t seem to be eating the hay. I gently stroked it’s cheek, it looked at me. I wanted to look at it’s teeth to see how old it was, but I didn’t have the heart. The horse looked like it was going to fall over any minute and the fence was the only thing keeping it vertical.

I felt silly and sad. I wished I could help this horse, of course my first impulse is to feed it, but it had food. One also never knows with something like this, if I give it food maybe that will cause it to colic or founder… If it didn’t have any feed I think I would have probably would have fed it, but there was feed.

I stepped away and went to my horse who lightened my heart, I gave her, her medicine and her ration of pellets.

On the way back out I stopped by the horse again and stroked its cheek and neck. I wish I could have offered it some comfort. It’s at the stable I am, and I’m sure that it is being cared for. I assume it’s a rescue or an old horse in decline, but it was definitely sad to see.

EDIT: I discovered that this horse was owned by an older gentleman that didn't want to put it down as long as he lived. He spent thousands and thousands of dollars to keep this horse alive. It had some sort of wasting disease where it's body could no longer absorb nutrition from it's food. It passed away some time last week.

Fabrications, the direct result of Robert Graves' invention of a tree calendar

I'm just putting this link here so I can find it moving forward... I did not write this, this is from Peter Berresford Ellis who was Educated at Brighton College of Art and the University of London, Ellis graduated from North East London Polytechnic (now part of the University of East London) in Celtic Studies in 1989. He also earned a master's degree in Celtic Studies from the University of East London (1993).

The Celtic 'tree zodiac' fabrications, the direct result of Robert Graves' invention of a tree calendar', have become an almost insurmountable barrier to any serious study of the forms of astrology that were practiced by pre-Christian Celtic society. For fifty years, from the time Graves' published his book The White Goddess (1946), a veritable industry has been built up among his acolytes, which preach artificial astrological ideas based on Graves' spurious arguments. Some have even published books on what they fondly term 'Celtic Astrology', manufacturing a completely artificial 'astrological system'.

The demise of the Cat-faced Spider

This was a poignant story in my life... When I was a kid my parents caught a spider that looked like this, a "cat faced" spider. They caught it for me because they thought I would like to see it, because it is pretty much the most bad ass spider I have ever seen in my life!

I now, know it was a Araneus gemmoides, commonly known as the Jewel Spider (a name shared with Austracantha minax) and Cat-faced Spider.

So with the coolest spider ever, I went to school to show my friends and my science teacher. The spider was a creature of much wonder, many ooo'ed and awwwed at it. Seems to me I was in my science class and my teacher wanted to talk to me about an unrelated matter, so I went up to her desk. When I returned to my desk, I was presented with the jar the spider was in. Now the poor thing had a gash in it's large abdomen where orange-brownish gook was leaking out... Presumably important stuff for it to remain alive. Apparently a boy that sat next to me thought it was fun to spin the spider around the jar. I was told sorry of course.

I was devastated, I had never intended for that spider to be harmed, it was going to have it's one day adventure going to my school and then I was going to set it free when I got home. I felt so guilty, and rightly so, that creature lost it's life because I took it out of it's home.

Krampus FAQ

1. How many people attend? Typically around 10+

2. Lauf means run, are we running? We move through a high traffic area, so we would not be able to run, we also try to stick together so the leader should be walking pretty slow. So we literally get dressed up in costumes and walk around in them for a couple hours in hopes of terrorizing or brightening someone's holiday.

3. How far is the walk? Roughly 6 blocks... Typically we start from Fair Trade and end at Bliss Rebar, usually we walk back the whole way it becomes a 12 block walk. If you wish you can park along the route or at the end... car pooling is encouraged.

4. How long does the walk take? Just for the walk about 50 minutes, we recommend you show up 30 minutes early to suit up.

5. Is the walk a bar crawl? This is simply a walk, some folks might choose to go out after but that is not part of our walk.

6. Are children welcome? They are! Please be mindful that we are walking in a high foot traffic area along streets, with lots of cars. BE CAREFUL and watch your children.

6. Do I have to wear a costume? We would love it if you did, but if you just want to come and take pictures or hang out that's fine too... We have a fine assortments of masks if you would like to wear one.

8. Keep in mind this is Friday night down town you will want to give yourself LOTS of extra time to find parking and get down to Fair Trade Coffee shop to suit up.

Here is the route we typically take^^^

Start point
Fair Trade Cafe
1020 N 1st Ave, Phoenix, Arizona 85003

End point
Bliss Rebar
901 N 4th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85004

Krampus ate my clothes!

Silly story...

I had noticed I was missing some work shirts... I tend to wear polo shirts to work and I could only find a couple of shirts. Now this went on for about two weeks... I couldn't figure it out... I asked my room mate if she had any of my clothes, you know as if I had left them in they dryer and she had taken them out. Nope... So I went a couple days and then I went to the Waffle and asked if he was throwing my clothes away out of spite for something, not that he would do something like that but I was getting desperate. I even started to suspect that my OTHER room mate got all psycho and was stealing my clothes for some weird reason.

So as I was walking into the dining room, it occurred to me that I had stuffed my clothes into the pants of my Krampus costume and had set it out side as a Halloween prop. When Halloween was over I had set it aside that evening saying I'd get to it the next day... then forgot about it! Yay! found my clothes!

Are you a witch or are you a fairy? Are you the wife of Michael Cleary?

I'm only posting this here for future reference... 'cuz I've spend hours pouring over the Internet to find it and couldn't because I thought it was a case from the 1950's. I also thought it was a child that was killed not a woman...

"Bridget Cleary was a seamstress married to a cooper nine years her senior named Michael Cleary. Around the village she was known to be a polite, friendly, independent woman, well respected but little understood by her neighbors. The couple had no children after eight years of marriage, which was unusual in those days, and they lived in one of the finer cottages in town. The well-dressed Bridget was known to take long walks by herself to deliver eggs to her customers and often stopped by the old “Fairy Forts”, medieval ring forts outside of Clonmel.

One day in March of 1895 during the hardest winter so far on record, the 26-year-old Bridget fell ill, and the events that followed are still shrouded in mystery and folklore. The doctor was summoned, but he took almost a week to show up, so Michael grew impatient and visited a “fairy doctor” who prescribed herbs for Bridget. By this ime, Michael had become convinced that the fairies had replaced his wife with a sickly changeling. Most likely the idea was planted in his mind by a relative who visited Bridget and thought her “much changed and not herself"."

My Descent into Goth

As I was laying in bed this morning trying to get back to sleep, I was considering the recently debated topic among some of my favorite YouTubers.

Can you be goth if you don’t listen to goth music?

I have to say that I leaned more towards yes-ish than a no, most likely due to my goth origin. I’ll get to why I’m a NO on this in a few.

I was “darkly inclined” before I ever heard goth music, at 12 I was reading Poe. I loved Vincent Price, and the Poe based movies he featured in, including The Pit and the Pendulum, Masque of the Red Death and my favorite The Comedy of Terrors (although I don’t think that is Poe based).

Just as an aside, perhaps my first goth album was the Alan Parson’s Project: Tales of Mystery and Imagination. All the songs were based on Poe’s works.

I wasn’t allowed to watch Freddy or Jason, but I was allowed to watch all the old black and white horror movies I wanted. So Frankenstein, the Wolfman and Dracula were top favorites. Of course I loved Vampires… and Werewolves… I think I might have loved Werewolves first…

Growing up in a small town in Arizona, back in the early 80’s we were pretty isolated, cable didn’t come all the way out to my house, so we had three network channels. Radio reception wasn’t that great either.

My folks listened to an array of music, but they mostly listened to country. Of course, all my peers listened to country, thus I listened to it as well. I always gravitated towards what I think now were darker or more supernatural songs. Such as Big Bad John by Jimmy Dean… yes, the sausage guy.
First, what I still love about country is that it tells a story. Big Bad John is about a man that may or may not have killed a man over his “Cajun Queen”. So, this man with a questionable past takes up working for a mine, of course he’s a big strong strapping lad. One day a beam gives way in the mine and John steps over and holds it while the rest of the miners evacuate. Unfortunately, John can’t escape the cave in, in time.

The second song “The Cajun Queen” is about how his lady love comes to find him. When she does she simply resurrects him and leaves town. I can totally see this as a goth song, revised as New Wave… Well maybe… If big goth dudes were miners…

I liked other songs like “Phantom 309” by Red Sovine. Phantom 309 is about a ghost semi. The driver, Big Joe,  dumped his rig and died to save a bus load of children, but his ghost picks up the occasional hitch hiker and delivers them safely to a truck stop.

In a small town with no radio and no cable, you have to find out about new music somehow… So I would buy the sound tracks to movies I liked. You also had to rely on friends who might be interested in other types of music to open your eyes to new bands.

Now I always maintained that Type O Negative was the start of goth music for me. I came to a startling realization this morning as I was laying there in bed… I was listening to the Cure a year before TON, and I was listening to Depeche Mode a couple years before the Cure. My friend Jenny was always listening to something different. She was playing Depeche Mode in her car one day, and I fell in love with it and…

Thus my first official goth album ever was “Songs of Faith and Devotion” by Depeche Mode! Okay, I concede that lots of goths think Depeche Mode is a throw away, but I’m not so sure about that. Then again, I like Depeche Mode more than the Cure. I know, take my black lipstick away.

So back to the soundtracks… I know that I was listening to the Cure before TON because I learned of the Cure from the Crow soundtrack. The movie came out in 1994. The following year Mortal Kombat came out and TON’s re-mastered version of Blood and Fire was on that album.

I had bought the sound track to Mortal Kombat and we were listening to it in my friend Jenny’s car. Funny thing as the first notes of Blood and Fire played we skipped the song because it sounded, “to 70’s”. Then when I listened to the full album at home, I fell hopelessly in love with Peter Steel’s voice. 22 years later, I listen to TON almost every day. I light a cigarette for Peter every Samhain.
Now back to “Can you be goth if you don’t listen to goth music?” and my now resounding NO.

You know what a metal head looks like, usually long hair, metal band t-shirt, battle vest, spikey cuffs, jeans, wallet on a chain and boots? Wouldn’t you be shocked as shit if you asked them about their patches and they said they didn’t listen to any of those bands, the patches were just “cool looking” and they only liked rap?

The goth appearance is about the music, it’s our “battle vest” if you will.

The only problem I can see here and it’s a big one… metal has a huge body of work to pull from. There’s death metal, power metal, speed metal, death core, folk metal, baby metal (if you count it) and the list goes on and on. New metal bands are coming out every day it seems, while yes it’s a specific type of music it’s still a fire hose of new music.

Goth has only post-punk, darkwave, ethereal wave and neoclassical. When you start diverging into death rock, gothic rock, industrial and goth metal you get more and more goths saying NO, that’s not goth. From what I can see the well of music, in comparison to metal, dwindles down to a drip.

You can’t expect kids getting into the scene now to go back and listen to Joy Division, Siouxie, Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy. They just aren’t going start off doing it, they will never have heard of those band, much like myself at the start. We as a community (if there is one) need to make sure we embrace the new bands and new versions of the music or goth will die when our elder goths die out. For fucks sake most goths are artists? We need to make the music for our future.

Here is a quick Krampuslauf survival guide:

1. Try on your costume before you get on site (Like TODAY) make sure you can see make, sure your pieces fit and aren’t terribly uncomfortable. If you wear glasses make sure they work with you’re your mask or wear contacts. There will always be parts of a costume that are more delicate or require adjustments more frequently than others. If you know these areas ahead of time, you can better plan out how your Krampuslauf will go and be prepared to deal with any problems that arise.
2. You should also be aware of any areas of the costume that may injure you during wear. Moleskin (which can be found at places like Walgreens) is an amazing product that helps prevent rubs and sores… especially with regards to SHOES for instance.
3. Do you need a handler or helper? A handler is basically someone who helps a Krampus in a complex costume. Figure out if you’ll need help getting into your costume, or if you’ll need someone to help guide you during the walk. (Consider dressing someone up as a victim to guide you)
4. Please eat before you come, no fainting Krampus’ allowed
5. Please bring your own water, last year I bought two cases and only two bottles were used… While our Brethren in Canada and Germany worry about cold, we have worry about over heating. Try to just add the "hint" of fur, on the shoulders, arms and waist. Think Krampus on summer vacation.
6. Stay in the group and let the leader know if we need to slow down
7. Know your limits, don’t push yourself. Consider parking at the end of the walk at the Bliss ReBar so you don’t have to walk the route twice.
8. Be aware of where you are, we will be crossing streets and we don’t want anyone to get hit by a car.
9. Be prepared to have pictures taken of you, we will be moving slow in some places so that folks can snap some photos
10. Have Fun!
